Additional Considerations

• Patient History- Cardiac and neurological history should be considered with propofol and ketamine. Ketamine is most appropriate where sympathetic response needs to be maintained such as trauma. However, it can increase myocardial oxygen demand in patients with CAD.
• Adrenal suppression is an important consideration in immunosuppressed and extremes of ages.
• Ketamine may not be the appropriate induction agent for patients with history of seizures as it can decrease seizure threshold. On the other hand, propofol can be useful as it increases seizure threshold.
• Propofol may not be appropriate in patients with egg and soy allergy.
• Ketamine is ideal for asthmatic patients due to its bronchodilatory effects.
